It all started with my Great-Great-Grandfather Albert James Robbins, quite the fighter who once fought John L. Sullivan in a bare-nuckle fight when Sullivan was taking on all comers.
Al lost the fight, but Sullivan gave him a gold watch with a gold chain and fob to commemorate the match. This is the account in the words of my Great-Uncle, Albert James Anderson, who was a Grandson of Al Robbins:
"My Granddad was quite a fighter. He fought the first Heavyweight Champion old John L. Sullivan. He was one of the early fighters, when they used bare knuckles. They had no gloves at that particular time. They fought in some kind of ring, but there was no time limit. It was just when somebody went down and could not get back up or your opponent gave up. Al stuck with John L. Sullivan and he fought so good that John L. Sullivan bought my Granddad a gold watch, and it had a horse's head- it was all in gold. John gave this to Al because, he said, of all the people he's ever fought, Al Robbins gave him one of the best fights he ever had."
- Albert James Anderson, Grandson of Al Robbins.
Next came my great uncle Mickey Adamick who was a rising light-weight star back in the 1940’s from Beaverdale Pennsylvania and fought out of Newark NJ. My other great uncle John Hand and Grandfather Richard Meiu both fought in the amateurs and honorably for their country through the US Army.
